Korean Beef Stew

If only I could bottle up the smell of this beef stew…. Mmmmmmm, if you are going to try any of the beef stew recipes on this site, so far today’s the best! Even though it calls for 1 Tablespoonful of chili-garlic sauce, the finished dish is not overly hot, just has that good kick that my whole family enjoyed!

  1. Heat large casserole and saute ginger in oil.
  2. Add the onions till soft then the garlic.
  3. Stir well till fragrant,.
  4. Dump in the beef spareribs and stir fry till beef changes color.
  5. In a large bowl, mix soy, sugar, wine,sesame oil, chili garlic sauce and hot water.
  6. Mix till well blended.
  7. Pour to beef (I used 2/3 of the sauce, didn’t want it to be too salty).
  8. Let simmer on low fire for 1 hour till 1 1/2 hours.
  9. Add in chopped green onions last 10 mins of cooking.

    did you use a wok or large saucepan for this recipe?

    when you dump in the stew beef, you said to stir fry till beef changes color … does that mean when it is slightly cooked (not well done), add the sauce?

      I usually use a large sauce pan for meat braising dishes. Stir fry the beef until the exterior changes color, but definitely not well done, the low heat simmer will cook the beef thoroughly and make it tender.

    hey, just wanted to let you know that i cooked this dish on monday for valentine’s day for my husband. he loved it. the sauce is definitely tasty. thanks so much for this recipe! 🙂

    we bought the stew meat at HEB. they only sell extra lean stew meat, so the meat wasn’t as fatty as we would like it. where do you buy your stew meat?

      Woooooooo, I am so happy you and your husband both liked the recipe! I normally purchase meat at the local Asian supermarkets, my husband likes fattier meat also, but our little girl and I do not, so I try to compromise by buying beef/pork with just a little fat on them.

      HEB is pretty great, I do trust their meat more than buying from Asian markets, though the price difference can be substantial!
