Hi everyone! Sorry for the lack of postings in the last couple of weeks. Do you ever go through “Burn-Outs” with cooking? I definitely go through periods of time when I just want to make something simple and not experiment with new recipes. Of course there are periods of time when I don’t feel like cooking at all (I know, shocking right?). Well instead of having fun in the kitchen, I’ve been doing lots of organization and cleaning of the house, the best thing about cleaning is finding hidden gems you never even knew you possessed! My hubby is actually a better cook than me, and years ago when his jobs was less stressful, hubby was the cook of this house hold. So from my huge “Summer Cleaning” project, I found a HUGE collection of cookbooks he acquired, you can’t imagine the excitement I felt when I laid my eyes on this stack of possibilities!
Today I am sharing a super simple and delicious fish recipe from one of the cookbooks I found, ever since making this dish my little girl has been asking for repeat performance, hope you will enjoy this as much as we did!
Ingredients:
2 large white fish fillets (I used Basa)
1 green onion, sliced
2 slices of ginger, julienne
1 hot pepper, seeded
2 large garlic cloves, minced
1 cup of corn starch
Seasning:
A:
1 tbsp cooking wine
1 tbsp chicken flavored powder
B:
2 Tbsp sugar
1 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsp water
2 tbsp vinegar
1/2 tbsp sesame oil
1 tbsp corn starch
Steps:
- Trim and slice scriss cross on the fish fillets, marinate with Seasoning A, then coat with corn starch, make sure every surface is evenly coated. Deep fry in hot oil until crispy.
- Meanwhile mix Seasoning B in a bowl, set aside
- Heat 2 tbsp of oil to fry garlic, ginger and hot pepper, add reserved Seasoning B in and bring to boil. Pour the sauce over fish, sprinkle of green onion and serve with white rice. Enjoy!
No Jeno, not shocking at all! I do have moments like this at times too! Esp if you’re cooking everyday and you just run outta ideas what to cook or just simple wanna take a little break from cooking… 🙂
Wow! I’m feeling so happy and excited for you too! 😀
I’ve lots and tons of recipe books also (I used to LOVE buying recipe books when they’re on sales!) but just too lazy to refer and also bcoz I find it ‘troublesome’ to keep referring to the book while cooking and tends to dirty the book which I hate most! This is why now, I always copy the recipes on a pc of paper (easier for me to clip it anyway nearby), after that, I’ll clip all together on my fridge, easier too if I wanna cook those dishes again! lol
I’m gonna try this sweet and sour fish some days! 😉
Hi Lyn, good to know I am not the only person who doesn’t “Always” feel like cooking! And I totally know what you mean by getting the cook books dirty. If you go through my books, you can definitely tell which ones are my favorites, because most likely the pages are almost falling out, and they’ve got all kinds of mystery stains on them!
Jeno, we all have moments when we want to make only the foolproof 10-minutes-recipes or just have a sandwich…
I think if I found hidden cookery books, I would stop working and take holidays to stay at home reading the books! I should maybe also start cleaning the house…
The fish looks lovely and I’m sure the sour taste goes perfectly well with it (I have been recently enjoying vinegared fish, so am sure sour flavour is what the fish like!).
Sissi, I truly cook for my family, so I have them to thank for acquire this cooking skill! I have yet to dive into the more exotic cook books, when I say exotic, I mean “American”. Isn’t that funny? The Chinese/Vietnamese cookbooks will get used quite a bit.
Cindy, it’s not just you…. me too…. It might look like I’m cooking if you see my post 3 times a week, but I’ve been so busy that I rarely have time for cooking and it’s been very simple food (pasta, yakisoba, you know those easy food….). At least your cleaning is done and your house is all organized! Mine is still..ugh. This fish dish looks delicious, especially the seasonings (i’m weak for slight vinegar taste in sauce)!!
Simple food are normally the best ones! I am sure your house is organized, most likely more organized than my home. I don’t even want to begin to tell you how dirty we were. Hahah! Have a great weekend Nami, enjoy yourself and stop being so busy!
it’s not shocking at all .. DO you know I hate to cook on fridays …. silly right 🙂 Sometimes even feel like going slow and it’s ok! This is a great recipe and sweet and sour taste is my fav.
Hi Kankana! I wonder how many of my foodie friends eat out on weekends. We don’t usually cook on the weekends, and by Sunday my little girl and I are pretty tired of going out, sometimes she begs to stay at home for brunch. I hope you will enjoy this fish recipe!
I definitely know cooking burnouts! I I have one, I usually make the same things over and over again, so I don’t have to think too much. But I’m glad you seem to have overcome it now – and this fish looks wonderful! 😀 I imagine the flavors are overwhelming.
Kath, yes, I am definitely up for cooking this week! Been studying up some simple Vietnamese recipes during the weekend, kind of excited!
Made this recipe last night! Was a big hit with my family! Thank you!
Ahhhh Yay! Thank you for letting me know DD! This truly is one of our favorite way to eat fish also, the sweet and sour combination is just so yummy!
thank you for this recipe!!! my husband and 5 year old inhaled this for dinner. i wish i could’ve had a bit more but it was gone in a blink of an eye!! delicious!
Hi Caroline, thank you so much for letting me know, this is so exciting! The funny thing is this recipe is actually one of my husband and 8 year old’s favorite, they request for me to make it very often! So glad to hear your family has similar taste, isn’t it wonderful when the family love your cooking?
oh sweetie you are not alone..I have those days, and evenings all the time when i really either don’t know what to cook or just don’t want to put even effort to try something new.
I also love cleaning and finding stuff that I haven’t seen in a while:))
Great recipe, as always! I Love Basa!
Hi Sandra! Basa has become my go to fish, they are inexpensive, and not fishy at all, the meat’s tender and flaky, very ideal for cooking!
It’s always surprising to know seasoned foodies like you have days where cooking does not seem appealing. I always think your family’s super lucky to have such a wonderful Mom who LOVES to cook, I have to say blogging has helped me to keep up with things, since if I don’t cook, not only am I letting the family down, I would be letting my blog visitors down also… A very good motivator!
Hi I just tried your recipe and it was a hit! Even my boyfriend who doesn’t really like to eat fish loved this. He even asked me to make it again sometime in the future! Thanks so much for sharing 🙂
Thank you so much Nathalie for letting me know! It’s such a joy to know the recipes I shared are being loved by folks and their loved ones. The sweet and sour fish recipe is a hit at my house also, certainly a great way to get the family to eat healthier!
I totally missed all your old posts..Will just have to one day go one by one LOL! This looks yummy…sweet and sour fish and on top it’s fried, mmm you cannot go wrong with that!:)
Thank you for reminder on FB about your old posts…
Thank you Sandra for the lovely comment! I missed a lot of your postings also, this is why I started posting old recipe links onto FB Page, figured some of my new foodie friends will be able to test the old recipes out this way. This fish recipe is definitely worth trying, if my husband says so, I can proudly recommend it!
